The central question

Why is sustainable supply chain transformation still failing despite genuine commitment from global brands?

This research programme has spent fourteen years examining one of the most consequential and least honestly confronted questions in business. Brands are making commitments. Certifications are being issued. Reports are being published. And transformation, real, structural, supply-chain-deep transformation, is largely not happening.

The gap between commitment and transformation

  • Brands are making commitments.
  • Certifications are being issued.
  • Reports are being published.

And transformation is still not happening.

Sustainability is not a choice. It is the only option. The leaders and companies who understand this first do not just transform themselves. They transform the rules of competition for everyone that follows.

Where it breaks

Aggregation is what removes traceability

Thousands of producers feed a handful of mills. The mills feed a few traders. The traders feed one brand. Material is mixed so often that origin stops being a property of the shipment.

A certificate describes one known thread. It does not describe the rope.

Both books

The textbook makes the case to the people who will run these supply chains. The novel makes it to everyone else.

And transformation is still not happening. This book asks why.

Most sustainability strategies address the symptoms, certifications, pledges, supplier audits, while leaving the underlying system intact. Real transformation embeds environmental and social responsibility into the operating logic of supply chains, making ethical conduct structurally necessary rather than voluntarily maintained. This textbook shows how.

A novel

“Sustainability is not a choice. It is the only option.” These seven words became the title of a novel. They are also the conclusion of fourteen years of field research.

The novel carries the same argument as the textbook into narrative: one man, one company, and the decision that turns a commitment into a transformation.

Where the ideas were tested

All field work

Sponsored by P&G

Sustainable Palm Oil Supply Chain Transformation

Diagnosed structural constraints preventing RSPO certification. Designed a Big Data Analytics framework to convert the certification process from punitive to preventive, addressing the barriers that kept smallholder farmers outside a system designed in their name.

Sponsored by Innovate UK

Home and Personal Care Consumer Products, NetZero Carbon Targets

Developed a modelling and assessment capability to optimize the design, production and supply of sustainable home and personal care consumer products and meet net zero carbon targets.

Sponsored by CII & USAID

Rural Value Chain Transformation, Eastern India

Assessed commodity value chains across Eastern India, identifying barriers and enablers for sustainable economic transformation, bridging policy, infrastructure, and supply chain design in a single research engagement.

Grant-funded · North East UK

AI-Based Fleet Routing for Net-Zero Emissions

Developed and deployed an AI routing application for SMEs in North East UK. Demonstrated that transformation does not require multinational resources. It requires the right technology, applied with precision to the right problem.
